About the Inn

Welcome to the Station House B&B

In the historic village of Granville, the former railroad depot stands as a welcoming reminder of a time when the arrival of a train was the most anticipated moment of the day. Built during the slate boom of the nineteenth century, the station flourished as part of the expanding network of the Delaware and Hudson Railway, carrying locally quarried stone to distant cities while bringing new residents, goods, and opportunity back to the village. The whistle of arriving locomotives once signaled prosperity, helping transform Granville into a vibrant and well-connected community.

As automobiles and trucking gradually replaced rail travel in the twentieth century, service along the line declined, and by 1983, the tracks fell silent. Fortunately, the depot itself was spared from demolition—a rare survival among small-town stations. But the story did not end there.

Rather than fading into history, the building began an exciting second chapter when it was carefully restored and re-imagined as the welcoming Station House Bed & Breakfast. The thoughtful restoration earned the Historic Preservation Award, recognizing the care taken to honor the depot’s architectural character. More recently, the Station House has been named Best Bed and Breakfast in all of Washington County for three consecutive years—a testament to the warmth and hospitality found within its historic walls.

Today, guests can sleep within walls that once greeted generations of travelers, blending period styling with modern comfort. The abandoned rail corridor was also thoughtfully transformed into the scenic Delaware & Hudson Rail Trail, where walkers and cyclists now follow the very path once traveled by freight and passenger trains—experiencing the landscape at a slower, more reflective pace.

The depot’s journey—from industrial hub to cherished lodging—reflects Granville’s enduring commitment to preserving its heritage while inviting new travelers to become part of its story.
